The Coagulation Abnormalities and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation in Patients of Dengue Viral Infection and Its Correlation with Dengue Fever Severity
Abstract
Objectives: To determine the frequency of coagulation abnormalities and disseminated intravascular coagulation in patients of dengue viral infection with bleeding manifestations admitted at Bahawalpur victoria hospital Bahawalpur and find correlation with dengue severity.
Study Design: Descriptive study
Setting and Duration of Study: The study was conducted on admitted patients in the Dengue ward and samples were processed at Hematology department of Bahawalpur victoria hospital, a tertiary care hospital. Study was conducted over a period of 1 and half year from 13-7-2019 to 12-1-2021.
Subjects and Methods: Total 200 cases of DEN-V infection with bleeding manifestations were included in the study. They were categorized as Dengue fever, Dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome according to WHO case definition. They were screened for presence or absence of coagulation abnormalities or DIC.
Results: Mean age was 38.07±17.26 years. There were 66.5% (n=133) male and 33.5% (n=67) female patients. Out of 200 patients, 68 % (n=136) had dengue fever, 23.5 % (n=47) were of dengue haemorrhagic fever and 8.5 % (n=17) were having dengue shock syndrome. Out of 200 patients, 27.50 % (n=55) were found to have coagulation abnormalities while 6.0 % (n=12) had DIC.
Conclusion: Significant number of patients with dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome had coagulation abnormalities and DIC.
