One Year Experience of Neonatal Surgical Admissions and Their Clinical Outcome in Paediatric Surgical Unit

Abstract

Background

Neonatal surgical cases are associated with significant number and varieties of congenital and acquired anomalies that remain a challenge from time to time, including preoperative evaluation, surgical intervention, and postoperative outcome.

Objective: Our aim was to assess variety of neonatal cases managed in our setup, their mode of presentation, age at presentation and their clinicaloutcome.

Methods

A retrospective study conducted over a period of one year. All neonatal cases in whom surgical intervention was performed their age, sex, mode of presentation, type of anomaly, surgical intervention and outcome were recorded in the study.

Results

A total of 52 neonates were included in this study. 31 were male and 21 were female patients with different anomalies were intervened through various surgical procedures. The mean age of participants was10.6 days, mostly admitted through emergency department(38/73%).Most common variety was of patients with imperforated anus (23 /44.2%), followedby inguinal hernia (7/13.4%), pneumothorax (4/7.6%), urogenital sinus (3/5.7%), infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (3/5.7%), malrotation with ladd's bands (3/5.7%)and abdominal wall defect (3/5.7%), pneumoperitonium (2/3.8%), and one case (1.9%) each of hirschsprungs disease, right sided ovarian cyst, meconium ileus and left sided eventration of diaphragm. Overall morbidity was found in 6 (11.5%) cases and 3 (5.7%) patients expired.

Conclusion

Variety of surgically intervened cases were found while investigating, having significant morbidity and mortality among neonates. Anorectal malformations were among most common causes in presenting neonates. Timely investigation, management and follow-up is mandatory to decrease the morbidity and mortality among neonates.
