Abstract

Introduction: Oral hygiene is very important as the mouth forms the gateway to the body. An electric toothbrush helps in reducing the amount of motor strain that would be generally needed to clean the teeth using a manual toothbrush. However, it also has some drawbacks as in the case of maintenance, cost, and increased soft tissue injuries.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to assess the level of awareness about the electric toothbrush among the outpatients at Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai.

Materials and Methods: 112 people were interviewed based on a self-structured questionnaire, their responses were recorded and were subjected to statistical analysis by using IBM SPSS software version 20.1. Within the software, pie charts were obtained to calculate the frequencies of the recorded responses, and clustered bar charts were obtained to find the correlations using the Chi-square test.

Results: 26.79% of the population used an electric toothbrush, while 73.21% used a manual toothbrush. 25% of the population were aware of the different types of electric toothbrushes available on the market, 26.79% of the people were not aware of the various types of electric toothbrushes available, 48.21% were moderately aware. However statistically significant differences were not observed between the respondents concerning educational qualifications (p>0.05).

Conclusion: The majority of the respondents are not aware of Electric toothbrushes and it is required to educate the patients about different types of Oral Hygiene aids available even though the electric aided devices cannot replace the conventional toothbrushes.
