Abstract

Background: Gephyrophobia is an anxiety condition defined by a dread of bridges and tunnels; people who suffer from this phobia may avoid using routes that cross bridges. High levels of phobia result in mental problems.

Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted about gephyrophobia among Saveetha dental colleges with a sample size of 104. A standard self-administered questionnaire was prepared and circulated via online google forms. The statistics were done by using SPSS software, the correlation with gender was obtained in crosstabs. P-value is 1.609 which is greater than 0.05, which is considered to be insignificant.

Results: All the results are obtained in pie charts and all the correlations are obtained in graphs. Among 104 respondents, 76% weren’t aware of what gephyrophobia was and about 71.2% had no fear of crossing high bridges and tunnels. About 50.96% male and 18.27% female never feared crossing bridges and tunnels with no statistically significant differences. (P-value  0.628) .

Conclusion: This study confirmed the level of gephyrophobia among Saveetha Dental College students in which it is obtained that they have low levels of phobia towards crossing bridges and tunnels. But when compared with gender, females are to be more gephyrophobia than males among dental students.
