KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS OF ADVERSE EFFECTS OF BEVERAGES ON DENTAL HEALTH AMONG UNDERGRADUATE DENTAL STUDENTS- A QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY

Abstract

Introduction: Beverages are liquids meant for human consumption. Beverages include alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks which have a stimulating effect on the individual. The consumption of beverages associated with the formation of dental caries which is also popularly called tooth decay. It is caused due to the chemical action of beverages along with leftover food in the oral cavity and human saliva which causes the demineralisation of the enamel layer of the tooth. If not taken care of in the initial stages there can be further damage of  hard tissues of the teeth extending from enamel to pulp which can dissolve the entire tooth and cause complete extraction.

Aim: This study has been conducted to study the effect of beverages on the health of dental students.

Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 146 students from Saveetha Dental college and Hospitals, Chennai. Simple random sampling technique was employed.  The institutional review board clearance was obtained following which a Questionnaire consisting of 10 questions was circulated through google forms. (SPSS) software version 23.0 was used for analytics and Pearson’s chi-square association was done to assess the knowledge about the adverse effects of beverages among dental students.

Results: It was found that 36% of the students preferred drinking beverages instead of water, 45% of the individuals consumed beverages three times a week and 24% of the individuals consumed beverages everyday. There is a statistically significant difference observed among the participants with regards to the type of beverage consumption (Chi Square value: 17.017 ;p value: 0.009)

Conclusion: The study was conducted to analyse the effects of beverages on dental students and create awareness among them about its impacts. 90% of the students were aware about the adverse effects of beverages on teeth.
