KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS OF ASTRAPHOBIA AMONG UNDERGRADUATE DENTAL STUDENTS IN CHENNAI - A QUESTIONNAIRE STUDY

Abstract

Introduction: The term astraphobia is derived from the greek word astrape, meaning lightning and phobos, meaning fear. Specifically astraphobia is an excessive and irrational fear of thunder and lightning or of thunderstorms. Astraphobia comes under the category of natural environment phobias.Astraphobia falls under the category of natural environment phobias. Astraphobia is also known as brontophobia.

Aim: To study the awareness and prevalence of astraphobia among dental students.

Materials and Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was created and circulated in google survey forms. 100 responses were collected and analysed using SPSS software version 23.0. The data were collected, processed and analysed statistically using the chi-square test.

Results: 58% of the students are aware of astraphobia and 24% of the students are afraid of thunderstorms. 20% of the female students responded that thunderstorms are scary. 23% of the female students and 13% of the male students responded that they get panic attacks during thunderstorms.

Conclusion: The study concluded that the students are aware of astraphobia. Female students have increased fear towards thunderstorms compared to male students. To replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts of the Astraphobia patients counselling should be done.
