Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid dysfunction is the second most common glandular disorder of the endocrine system, which may rear its head in any system in the body including the mouth. The oral cavity is adversely affected by either an excess or deficiency of thyroid hormone. Childhood hypothyroidism known as cretinism is characterized by thick lips, large protruding tongue (macroglossia), malocclusion and delayed eruption of teeth.The common oral findings include the characteristic macroglossia,dysgeusia,delayed eruption,poor periodontal health,altered tooth morphology and delayed wound healing.childhood hypothyroidism known as cretinism characterized by thick lips, large protruding tongue,malocclusion and delayed eruption of teeth.

AIM: The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge about awareness of hypothyroidism among dental students.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data collection was done by questionnaire survey.Study population contains 100 Participants. Data was entered in Microsoft excel sheet after collection and was analysed using SPSS software. Descriptive statistics were expressed by means of number, frequency, and percentage. Chi-square test was used to find the association between Gender and Number of responses provided by the participants.

RESULTS:  The present study reported that 35% answered Grave’s disease 65% answered cretinism awareness about childhood hypothyroidism. 35% answered Increased in thyroid hormone and 65% answered decreased in thyroid hormone awareness about causes of hypothyroidism. 70% answered Yes and 30% answered No awareness about whether you agree that tooth problems result from thyroid hormone imbalance.

CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the present study it can be concluded that there was more aware of hypothyroidism among dental students. This study concluded that the most prevalence of hypothyroidism among dental students
