KNOWLEDGE AND AWARENESS ABOUT INTERDENTAL CLEANSING AIDS AMONG UNDERGRADUATE DENTAL STUDENTS - A QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY

Abstract

Introduction: Awareness on oral health promotes good oral hygiene practices. Interdental cleansing is just as essential as brushing to prevent dental disease by eliminating the interdental plaque.Therefore, the aim of the study is to evaluate the knowledge and awareness of interdental cleansing aids among the dental students.

Materials and methods: A cross sectional survey was conducted. The sample size used for the study is 102. A self structured Questionnaire has been prepared and uploaded in google forms. This standard Questionnaire in google forms is being circulated among the population and at the end of the survey, all the data were collected and the data is been analysed by using chi-square analysis. The chi square analysis was done using the software IBM SPSS (V 22.0).

Results: 70.59% of participants were female. Females were more aware of interdental cleaning aid than males. 79.41% of participants knew that dental floss was essential to remove plaque from the interdental area. 68.63% of participants have used dental floss and 31.37% of participants have not used dental floss.Although the majority of females 69.69% are aware that tooth brushing alone was not sufficient it is not statistically significant when compared to males involved in this study (P>0.05).

Conclusion: The study concluded that the overall knowledge and awareness about the interdental cleaning aids was good and females have more awareness about interdental aids than males.
