PERCEPTION OF BEHAVIORAL COUNSELLING NEEDS AMONG UNDERGRADUATE DENTAL STUDENTS ACROSS SOUTH INDIA- A QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY

Abstract

Introduction:

Dental students are likely to be models for behavior of oral health. As a health protection supplier dental students are likely to educate their family members,friends and society to nourish good oral health. Nutrition which has been mostly accepted as a fundamental phenomenon of oral health where major dentists did not assimilate diet counselling in their  usual dental practice.Hence the present study was undertaken with an aim to investigate the perception of behavioral counselling needs among dental students.

Materials and methods:

A descriptive cross sectional study involving dental students of age (18-23) yrs from different dental colleges across south India were  the study population.and the total sample size will be 110..Data will be entered in Microsoft Excel Sheet and analysed using SPSS software (IBM Software version 23;NY).Descriptive statistics was expressed by means of number and frequency and percentage and the chi square test was used to find out association between variables for statistical significance (P<0.05).

Result:Majority of the students did not feel homesick (61.82%), the rest felt homesick (38.18%). Majority of the students did not feel sleep deprived(74.55%), rest felt sleep deprived (24.45% ). Majority of the students ate nutritious food for maintaining their health (91.82% ), the rest of them did not eat nutritious food for maintaining their health (8.18% ).  Majority of the students did not feel any change in their behaviour or attitude due to stress(80%),  rest of them felt a change in their behaviour or attitude due to stress (20%).A statistically significant association was observed between genders regarding responsibility to educate patients about the risk of tobacco (P<0.05) .

Conclusion:      

The study concluded that there  was adequate awareness about perception of behavioral counselling.There was more awareness about perception of behavioral counselling among female students than male students .
