The effect of educational intervention using interactive approach on change behavior in health literacy promotion and quality of life improvement of patients with type 2 diabetes

Abstract

Diabetes is one of the chronic diseases that endangers people's health and reduces the quality of life of individuals.People with inadequate health literacy are less likely to follow the recommended care program.This study was an experimental clinical trial.The study population included patients with type 2 diabetes referred to the Imam Ali Complex Clinic in Karaj.100 patients were selected by block random allocation method and were divided into two groups of intervention and comparison with the same method.The study instrument was the Standard Of Functional Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLS-SF12) and the WHOQOL-BREF Health-Related Quality of Life Questionnaire. First,the questionnaires were completed by two groups before training.Three months later,the educational intervention was performed in 6 sessions of 60-90 minutes for the intervention group. And then the two groups filled out the questionnaires independently.Data were analyzed using SPSS25 statistical software and independent t-test,Kruskal-Wallis,covariance and Chi-square.Before the intervention,no significant difference was observed between the two groups in terms of knowledge and literacy, health, physical health,mental health and mean hemoglobin.But after the intervention,a significant difference was observed between knowledge(p <0.001)and health literacy (p <0.001)in the two groups.And physical health increased significantly and mental health(P = 0.001).And a significant decrease in hemoglobin A1c in the intervention group(P = 0.001)and also a significant increase In terms of personal control of blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c,The had weight control,exercise and diet.The control group did not have any significant changes in the measured variables.The decrease in the mean of hemoglobin A1c and the improvement in the physical and psychological dimensions of the quality of life of the intervention group are mainly due to changes in their behavior.The results of this study are clinically beneficial for patients with type 2 diabetes and help the physician to better control diabetes.In addition,the educational method used is cheap,suitable,for primary and applicable clinical care.
