Abstract

Introduction: Denture teeth and denture base materials are often exposed to various elements and intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Consuming beverages such as coffee, tea and wine have been reported to cause discoloration of the denture material ultimately affecting the colour stability of the material. Colour stability of denture base materials are of significant importance as it appeals to the esthetic requests of the denture wearer. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the colour stability of heat cure resin in various hot beverages.

Materials and methods: Ten pellets of heat-cure (DPI) were prepared using silicon moulds of unified shape, diameter and thickness (10 x 10 x 4 mm). The samples were cured in the curing unit following the manufacturer’s instructions, finished and polished. The samples were randomly sorted into three groups for checking the colour stability. Group A (samples 1, 2, 3 and 4) set of samples were tested for colour stability with coffee, Group B (samples 5, 6 and 7) with tea and Group C (samples 8, 9, and 10) with distilled water. The samples were immersed in their respective solutions for 24 hours, rinsed and dried prior to evaluation. The pre and post immersion values were recorded using the Vita spectrometer and were compared to arrive at the results. A mean value comparison graph between the colour stability values calculated for the coffee, tea and distilled water samples was generated using SPSS version 23.

Results and discussion: Post immersion values of àE in sample 1, 2, 3 and 4 were 3.072, 4.534, 4.134 and 2.385 respectively. The △E values of sample 5, 6 and 7 after immersion in tea was 11.931, 11.484 and 11.837 respectively and that of samples 8, 9 and 10 after immersion in distilled water was 2.947, 4.055 and 3.854 respectively.

Conclusion: The heat cure denture base resin samples which were immersed in tea solution showed greater discolouration than the samples immersed in coffee and distilled water.
