KNOWLEDGE, AWARENESS AND PREVALENCE OF POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME AMONG UNDERGRADUATE DENTAL STUDENTS - A QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY

Abstract

Background: Awareness of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and complications is essential for early treatment and to prevent further serious complications of it. The aim of the study is to assess the awareness of PCOS among dental female students.

Materials and Methods: The cross sectional study was conducted among dental female students. The questionnaire was distributed through an online survey link, study population of 100 dental students. The participants were explained about the purpose of the study in detail. The questions were studied by the respondents and corresponding answers were marked by the respondents. The data was collected and statistically analysed using SPSS software. Descriptive statistics were expressed by means of number, frequency, and percentage. The Chi- Square test was used to find the association between variables. The level of statistical significance is at p<0.05.

Results:  In the present study the education qualification of the respondents are UG 68% and pg 16%. 85% of females are aware of the pcos syndrome. 44% of the respondents have irregular menstrual cycles. The respondents have been asked that, will the ovaries get affected if the majority of the respondents are not aware of the symptoms happening in the PCOS.

Conclusion: According to the above study following conclusions can be drawn, knowledge about the PCOS was fair enough but the awareness and symptoms of the PCOS among the respondents are very less.
