Abstract

AIM: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of maltitol chewing gum against Actinomyces species in preventing dental caries formation

Materials and method: A systematic review of controlled trials was performed. Electronic and hand search retrieved 270 records, 220 were screened. The intervention and outcomes were assessed in the study included for systematic review.

RESULTS: Four studies were included in our systematic reviews which were randomized control trials.  Among the four trials, three were found to be statistically significant, but further studies should be done to prove the appropriate effectiveness of maltitol chewing gum against Actinomyces species. We were not able to conduct Meta-analysis due to clinical heterogeneity among the study design and difference occurred in reporting of data.

CONCLUSION:  The maltitol chewing was very effective in reducing Actinomyces species and it can be effectively used to prevent the dental caries.
