Abstract

Introduction: Tobacco cessation for current tobacco users is a challenging task in the community and health care settings.  Tobacco cessation in hospital settings is crucial and a challenging task. What type of approach is most effective for tobacco cessation in hospital settings is not clear, and the factors those  help develop long-term abstinence varies from place to place. However, several studies reveled that a hospital-based tobacco cessation intervention using Behavioral Modification (BM) is an effective tobacco cessation method, can be considered.

Aims: The present study aims to find the Effectiveness of Multimode Tobacco cessation programme, ie. (Health Education (HE), Group Therapy (GT) and individual Counseling) to decrease the nicotine dependence level among tobacco users.

Methods and Materials: Eighty subjects who had the habit of smoking tobacco(S) and /or smokeless tobacco (ST) admitted to the de-addiction center for treatment were selected for the study using the purposive sampling technique.  Demographic Profile and the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) tools were used to collect the information from the participants who were admitted on the 1st day of the hospital. Participants were divided into three members in a group.  They were given intervention for a period of twenty-one days. The study participant's nicotine dependence level was assessed periodically on the 7th, 14th and 21st days’ intervention using the FTND scoring tool. The data were analyzed by using SPSS software version 20.0.  Descriptive statistics, repeated measures of ANOVA, and Bonferroni corrections were used to interpret the results. The P-value <0.001 was taken as statistically significant for effectiveness of the intervention

Results: The study revealed that the Nicotine dependence level among tobacco users is reduced from Day 1 to day 21 by tobacco cessation program of intervention sessions of health education (HE), group therapy (GT), and individual counseling (IC),(F=72.93, P=0.000 P<0.05). It had expressed that, influence of the intervention on the level of nicotine dependence is significant (Effect size is 48%). It also shows the significant changes were developed in terms of the level of nicotine dependence expressed by FTND score over the set period of the study. However, there was a men change 1.413(14.13%) on Health education (HE) on the 21st day. Hence, it has proved that Health education (HE) with supplementation of information booklets had an positive impact on tobacco cessation, compared to Group therapy (GT), and individual counseling (IC) session for tobacco cessation.

Conclusion: This study concluded that the multimode intervention is effective for tobacco cessation program, i.e., of Health education (HE) with an information booklet, Group Therapy(GT), and individual Counseling (IC).Therefore multimode interventions are effective to reduce the level of nicotine dependency  among tobacco users.
