Drug-Eluting balloon angioplasty VS standard balloon angioplasty in diabetic foot treatment: 24-month follow up

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to Compare therapeutic response between drug eluting balloon angioplasty and conventional balloon angioplasty in a 12 to 24-month follow-up in diabetic foot patients who underwent below the knee balloon angioplasty, 2017-2018 in Firouzgar Hospital.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional study that was performed on patients who underwent angioplasty in Firouzgar Hospital in Tehran between 2017 and 2018 due to diabetic foot. information of patients referred to the relevant ward in Firouzgar hospital was extracted and according to the existing patient records, their treatment process was reviewed and the rate of recurrence of diabetic foot ulcer and improvement of diabetic foot ulcer in follow-up Recorded in patients' files were examined and extracted by analyzing information. according to which method of angioplasty they had, patients were placed in different groups and the information was analyzed.

Results: 53 patients that were eligible became included in this study. the relationship between diabetic foot ulcer healing and type of angioplasty is statistically significant and the rate of diabetic foot ulcer healing in drug eluting angioplasty is significantly higher. it was shown that the relationship between the improvement of claudication symptoms and the type of angioplasty is also statistically significant and the rate of improvement of claudication symptoms in drug eluting angioplasty is significantly higher. it was shown that the relationship between the need for amputation and the type of angioplasty is not statistically significant and the difference between the need for amputation in the two groups of drug eluting and conventional angioplasty is not significant. it was shown that the relationship between wound recurrence and type of angioplasty is not statistically significant and the difference in wound recurrence between drug eluting and conventional angioplasty groups is not significant.

Conclusion: in this study, it was shown that drug eluting angioplasty can bring a high percentage of improvement in the symptoms of claudication and improvement of foot ulcer condition for patients with diabetic foot ulcer. Also, drug eluting angioplasty can be better in the field of healing diabetic foot ulcers and improving the symptoms of claudication and has a significant value as a treatment method for patients with diabetic foot ulcers.
