Abstract

Laryngectomy surgery causes acute psychological distress. The study aimed to evaluate the degree and cause of anxiety among total laryngectomy patients before and after surgery and find out the correlation between anxiety and self-care activities. In this correlational cohort three observations were undertaken - in the preoperative phase and after the surgery on the seventh day and on the day of discharge. To measure the degree of anxiety, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale- Anxiety tool were used. The study subjects presented with mean anxiety score of 9.136; this anxiety level increased to 14.046 at seventh day of post operative day and its decrease to 8.596 on the day of discharge. The common causes of anxiety were surgery related functional loss and surgery-related-care. Statistically, a self dependent patient presented has low level of anxiety in the post-operative period.
