Abstract

Vaccine formulations in liquid form are susceptible to instabilities caused by degrading processes that occur through a range of physical and chemical mechanisms. Many of these breakdown routes may be avoided or hindered in dried formulations, such as those made by lyophilization or spray drying. Because there is no freezing stage in freeze drying, the harm caused by this step is avoided. Spray drying's advantage is its ability to tailor particles to specific criteria, allowing them to be employed in a variety of vaccine delivery methods and routes. Although numerous spray dried vaccines have demonstrated promising preclinical outcomes, the number of vaccines evaluated in clinical trials is limited, demonstrating that vaccine stabilisation and delivery is still a relatively young field. The present state of spray-dried vaccine formulations and delivery technologies is discussed in this article.g
