Menopause and Hormone Replacement Therapy: What Menopausal Women Need to Know – A Study on Malaysian Population

Abstract

Background:

 Menopausal women experience numerous physical and psychological symptoms during menopause due to the hormonal changes that occur. Vasomotor symptoms, sleep disturbances, mood swings, depression, urinary tract infection, vaginal dryness, and atrophy will all be present, affecting their everyday, sexual, and social lives. Many population-based surveys report that 10% to 50% of incidences of menopausal symptoms among Asian women while some literature shows that Asian women suffer less psychological and vasomotor symptoms (Hamid et al., 2014). Furthermore, there are elevated health risks for a variety of chronic ailments, including osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive impairment (Hamid et al., 2014).

Objectives:

General objective

1. To measure the level of knowledge on menopause and HRT among menopausal women.

Specific objectives

1. To assess the level of knowledge on menopause and HRT among menopausal women of different ethnicities.
2. To assess the level of knowledge on menopause and HRT among menopausal women of different education level.

Methods:

This is a cross sectional study to assess the level of knowledge towards menopause and Hormonal Replacement Therapy among menopausal women attending Hospital Teluk Intan, Malaysia those who are in the age range of 40 to 65.

Results:

There was a statistically significant variation in respondents' mean knowledge across nationalities and educational levels, according to the data. In this study, there was a statistically significant difference in knowledge amongst respondents of various nationalities.
