Abstract

In the present study, the chemical characteristics of groundwater and drinking water quality has been studied. 10 groundwater samples were collected in Karur district during pre-monsoon period at 2019. The water samples further analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, bicarbonate, chloride, sulphate, calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium. The results were evaluated and compared with WHO and BIS water quality standards. The studied results reveal that the groundwater is fresh to brackish and moderately high to hard in nature. Na and Cl are dominant ions among cations and anions. Chloride, calcium and magnesium ions are within the allowable limit except few samples. Based on the WQI results of 10 samples, 20 % of the samples fell under excellent water category, 80 % of the samples showed good water category.  Majority of the samples are falling under excellent to good category and suitable for drinking water purposes.
