‘Assessment of Udarshool criteria in Infantile Colic mentioned in Vedanadhaya of Kashyap Samhita’

Abstract

Acharya Kashyap expalins Udarshool in ‘Vedanadhaya’. Explanation of sign and symptoms of Udarshool are Satanam Vyudsyte(child dislike the breast), Utanshch Avabhjyte (Lying in supine position), Rodana (Constant cries, throwing away of hands and legs against abdomen), Mukhasweda (Sweatingb over face), Udarstabhdt (Stiffness of abdomen)2. Some  symptoms of Udarshool are similar to that of infantile  colic  wherein   the   baby   has refusal to feed  inconsolable   cry and hard  abdomen . This is a condition where one express high intensive pain in abdomen, is due to vitiated vata dosha. Method- 130 subjects were belonging to age group of 1-6 months suffering from Udarshool from OPD and IPD Department of Kaumarbhritya Mahatma Gandhi Ayurved College Hospital and Research Center Salod (H), Wardha Maharashtra were assessed in the study. To collect the data a list of sign and symptoms is prepared which have been described for Udarshool in Vedhanadhaya in Kashyap samhita. The presence and absence of those features in a child included in the study will be given scores 0 and 1 and the Score were recorded systematically and result is analyzed. Results- The present study was done on only one among the various diseases of Vedanadhaya. The study shows that among 130 subjects 118 subjects were having Aversion to breast milk, 127 and 117 were having cry and distension in abdomen respectively. Hence, the interventional study is required so that we can apply the treatment given by Acharyas for Udarshool in current era.
