Abstract

Background – The advent of colonoscopic visualization has paved the way for more sensitive and specific cytological and biopsy diagnosis. The brush cytology carried out under the direct visualization of colorectal lesions has been considered as one of the most efficient way of tissue diagnosis

Objectives –  1. To study the colonoscopy guided brush cytology on colo- rectal lesions for its diagnostic utility, 2.To compare the diagnosis of brush cytology and endoscopic biopsy by statistical means

Material and method - Thirty nine patients underwent colonoscopy guided brush cytology. The equal number of patients were studied by endoscopic biopsy in the diagnosis of their lesion. The statistical values of comparison between brush cytology and biopsy diagnosis were carried out. Their advantages and disadvantages were also studied.

Results – The following statistical values for endoscopic brush cytology were observed -  Sensitivity (92.59%), Specificity (100%), Negative Predictive Value (85.71%), Positive Predictive Value (100%) and Diagnostic Accuracy (94.87%).

Conclusion – Brush cytology of colo- rectal lesions under direct visualization is efficient method of diagnosis which is comparable with biopsy diagnosis. It has several advantages such as multiple sampling without any complications.
