Abstract

Traditional medicine has been known and practiced since the beginning of recorded history. Some traditional practices may be called "continuity of customs, religious values, and even quackery practiced by nonspecialists." Cultural traditions and the spiritual domain, as well as the physical domain, have been linked to these activities. Dentistry, like medicine, is a highly regulated, traditional, science-based healthcare discipline that caters to increasingly sophisticated and demanding clients. Traditional dental practice is currently facing a number of challenges to the existing profession; these challenges are called “alternative" challenges (or complementary, unconventional, or integrative). The use of antimicrobial herbal products in dentistry to prevent dental infection has been well established. The goal of the review is to collect data on plants that have antimicrobial properties against pathogens that cause oral diseases. The analysis will assist clinicians and researchers in their search for and selection of plants for use in developing successful oral care medications.
