Abstract

The whole plant of Petiveria alliacea (Phytolaccaceae) was isolated and subjected to structural elucidation of chemical constituent. The petroleum ether fraction was purified and isolated using column chromatography and thin layer chromatography. Then the isolated compound was subjected to FTIR for recognition of functional groups and 1HNMR and 13CNMR for position of protons and carbon atoms are also subjected to  UV-spectrum. ESI-MS was done to recognize the molecular weight of the isolated compound. From FT-IR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR and ESI-MS, the isolated compound was found to be linolenic acid (i.e. omega-3-polyunsaturated fatty acid) and this is obtained from the spectra found.
