Abstract

Introduction : The method of Demirjian is one among other techniques reported  useful in estimating the chronological age based on dental age. Demirjian's method, which is a scoring system based on the use of developmental stages of teeth, has the advantage that the estimated dental age is reasonably precise because it is not based on the eruption phase of teeth.

Aim : The aim of the present study was to correlate the actual age of the individual with the staging of demirjian method.

Materials And Method : A sample of  100 orthopantomogramme (OPG's) representing various stages of tooth development of children aged 10 to 20 years were archived from the department of Oral Medicine and Radiology of Saveetha dental college and hospitals. Left permanent maxillary third molar(28), are rated on a stage scale from 0 to 9 staging using demirjian method. The data was analysed using independent t tests in SPSS statistically.

Results And Discussion :  The correlation between actual age of males and staging was done and showed p value 0.568>0.05 which was statistically insignificant. The correlation between actual age of females and staging was done and showed p value 0.285>0.05 which was statistically insignificant.

Conclusion : The actual age of the individual did not show any correlation with staging of demirjian method in both males and females. In future the staging of Demirjian can be correlated with various other populations to have a significant correlation between the age and the staging of the Demirjian method.
