Abstract

The urban areas of the country are filled with a large number of vehicles, traffic congestion has become a major problem. As the problem of traffic congestion in the city escalates, it becomes more and more necessary to find a new solution using emerging technology. An effective traffic management system must take into account changes in traffic density at different times of the day. For this, the traffic control system must become dynamic. The system we are proposingputs forward such a dynamic traffic control system that takes into account the variation in traffic density at different times of the day and allocates the green signal time according to the traffic density on the road. The proposed system is based on image processing. The image of the road is dynamically captured by a camera and processed to know the traffic density on the road. The captured image is processed using the smart edge detection algorithm and compared to a reference image. Based on the similarity between the two images, the allocation time of the green signal is determined. This system offers significantly improved response time, vehicle management, automation, reliability and overall efficiency compared to the already existing system.
