HDV causes co-infection or super infection with sever complication as compared to only HBV infection. No study on molecular level on HDV is available from this region.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to find out the molecular epidemiology of HDV (as a co-infection with HBV) in different geographical regions of Sindh.

STUDY DESIGN: Cross Sectional Descriptive Study.

PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: It was carried out at Diagnostic & Research Laboratory LUMHS Hyderabad from June 2017 to December 2018.

MATERIAL AND METHODS/RESULTS: Whole Blood samples were collected in 5 ml vacutainer.Total 1069 HBsAg positive samples were received for the study from different geographical regions of the sindh. Only HBV DNA PCR positive samples were further utilized for the presence of HDV RNA. For this purpose, HDV RNA and HBV DNA was extracted and amplified using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), for HDV extraction was done using Roche high pure vial nucleic acid kit & amplication was done using light cycler mix kit (Roche) on instrument z480 (Roche). Out of the total 1069 HBsAg positive samples, HBD was detected in total 562 (52.50%) samples belonged to different patients. From 773 males 415 (38.8%) were positive while from 296 females 147 (13.7%) were positive. The percentage of dual infection was found higher in male patients as compared to female patients. KandhKot, KandiaroGhotki, PanoAqil and KhairpurMirsobserved higher prevalence of HDV i-e 67%, 66%, 57%, 55% and also 55%respectively as compared to other cities in the province of Sindh.

CONCLUSION: The HDV infection is not uncommon in Sindh. The only way to prevent the infection is by educating the general population through a planned prevention program.

}, number={1}, journal={Drugs and Cell Therapies in Hematology}, author={Faheem Ahmed Memon, Zahida Shaikh, Zainab Nisar, Sadia Abbasi, Nazia Mumtaz, Kiran Aamir}, year={2022}, month={Jun.}, pages={31–39} }
